ETEM has operated in the Department of Business Administration of UoA since 2000. ETEM aims to satisfy the teaching needs of the UoA in various tourism-related courses including its postgraduate programme in Tourism Planning, Management and Policy. It provides specialised research and studies focusing on: Air Transport and Tourism, Tourism Management and Destination Management, Tourism Development, Economics of Tourism, Environment and Tourism, Anthropology of Tourism, Sociology of Tourism, Information Technology, E-Training and E-Business in Tourism, Tourism Marketing, Tourism Education and Training, Hospitality, Management of Tourism Enterprises and Organisations, Tourism and Culture, Special Interest Tourism, Sustainable Tourism Development.

Over time, ETEM has managed to develop strong links with local communities and regional government in the NUTS2 Regions of North and South Aegean in line with the wider aim of UAegean to become a growth pole of knowledge in the eastern border of Greece.
Over the years ETEM has conducted or supervised research projects and European programmes (circa 117). In addition to numerous publications in peer-reviewed academic journals, ETEM-UAegean members of staff have participated in tourism projects funded by the European Union.
